Body Believed to Be Nolan Wells Recovered After Friends Returned From Horn Island Without Him

A Mississippi community is mourning the loss of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, whose body was believed to have been recovered Monday after he disappeared during a Fourth of July outing on Horn Island.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Wells traveled to the barrier island with a group of friends on Independence Day. Investigators said the group later returned to the mainland without him after Wells reportedly chose to remain on the island. When he failed to return home, his mother reported him missing late Saturday night, prompting an extensive multi-agency search.

Search efforts included the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore personnel, and the United Cajun Navy. Around 8:45 a.m. Monday, a park ranger discovered a body in the water near the northwest end of Horn Island.

While officials are awaiting DNA confirmation, Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd and Sheriff John Ledbetter said there is no reason to believe the body is anyone other than Wells. Authorities believe he likely drowned, though the investigation remains ongoing. Officials also stated there is currently no evidence of foul play, and investigators have found no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role. A final determination will depend on the medical examiner's findings and toxicology results.

Wells graduated from Ocean Springs High School in 2025, where he excelled as a multi-sport athlete before continuing his football career at Southwest Mississippi Community College.

His passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from family members, classmates, teammates, coaches, and school officials. His mother, Christine Wonsley, described her son as someone who was always willing to encourage and uplift others, calling him "a special soul."

Ocean Springs High School head football coach Jake Bramlett remembered Wells as more than an exceptional athlete, praising his humility, work ethic, and leadership. Principal Dr. Jacob Dykes said Wells made a lasting impact on everyone around him through his kindness and dedication.

Southwest Mississippi Community College also expressed its condolences, remembering Wells as a respected and well-liked student. The college announced that counselors and local ministers would be available to support teammates and students as they cope with the tragic loss.

Authorities say the investigation remains active while official identification and the cause of death are finalized.
