Claressa Shields Dominates Kaye Scott to Reclaim Middleweight Titles in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. — Claressa Shields returned to the middleweight division in dominant fashion Saturday night, stopping Kaye Scott in the sixth round at State Farm Arena and reclaiming the WBA and WBC middleweight championships.

The victory keeps Shields undefeated at 19-0 and adds another major accomplishment to the résumé of one of boxing’s most accomplished fighters. The 31-year-old entered the bout after dropping nearly 15 pounds from her previous run in the heavyweight division, making her return to 160 pounds a highly anticipated moment.

Shields controlled the fight from the opening bell, winning the first five rounds and consistently attacking Scott’s body. The two-time Olympic gold medalist established her offense early, landing a sharp left hook in the opening round before unleashing a combination of punches in the second.

Scott continued to absorb punishment as the fight progressed. By the fourth and fifth rounds, Shields repeatedly targeted her opponent’s midsection and used her inside fighting to keep Scott under pressure.

The decisive sequence came in the sixth round. Shields connected with three consecutive left hooks, with each punch appearing to do more damage than the previous one. Scott eventually lost her balance and went down.

Scott managed to beat the count and was permitted to continue, but Shields immediately resumed her attack. As another combination landed, Scott’s corner threw multiple towels into the ring, prompting the referee to stop the contest.

The victory marks Shields’ return to the middleweight championship picture after previously holding at least one version of a 160-pound world title from 2018 through 2024.

With the WBA and WBC belts now back around her waist, Shields has already set her sights on potential major matchups. One possibility is a showdown with Lauren Price, the unified welterweight champion and fellow Olympic gold medalist. Shields has also expressed interest in potential fights against Mikaela Mayer and Canada’s Tamm Thibeault.

A win over Thibeault could give Shields another opportunity to become undisputed middleweight champion for a third time.

An estimated 15,000 fans packed State Farm Arena for the event, with prominent figures from boxing and entertainment in attendance, including Floyd Mayweather, Shakur Stevenson, Terence Crawford, Usher and Latto.

For Shields, the Atlanta victory was more than another win. It was a statement that she is back at 160 pounds and once again chasing championship history.
