Delta State Student Found Hanging From Tree on Campus
CLEVELAND, Miss. — A tragedy unfolded at Delta State University Monday morning when a student was discovered hanging from a tree in the heart of campus.
University Police Chief Mike Peeler confirmed that 21 year old Demartravion “Trey” Reed of Grenada, Mississippi, was found around 7 a.m. near the pickleball courts. Reed’s body was suspended from a tree when officers arrived.
The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office has taken custody of the body, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. While the case remains under investigation, Peeler stated that authorities do not suspect foul play. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and local agencies are assisting with the inquiry.
The discovery prompted an immediate shutdown of Delta State’s campus, though officials emphasized there was no danger to students or staff. “I just want to confirm, this is a safe campus. Delta State University is a beautiful place to be. It is just unfortunate this loss that comes heavily to our campus,” Peeler said during a press conference.
Delta State President Dr. Daniel Ennis also addressed the situation, calling the loss devastating and acknowledging the impact it will have on the university community. He said it remains unclear when classes will resume but assured that operations will restart “as soon as possible.”
The university released a statement shortly after 9 a.m. confirming the discovery of a deceased individual and noting that police and local law enforcement were immediately notified. “Out of respect for the individual and their loved ones, we will refrain from additional comments until authorities release more information,” the statement read.
Counseling and other support services are being provided to students, faculty, and staff as the investigation continues. All scheduled classes and campus events were canceled for the day.
Reed, a Black student at Delta State, was remembered by peers and officials as someone whose death leaves a deep mark on the community. While authorities maintain there is no sign of foul play, the circumstances of him being found hanging from a tree have drawn heightened attention and concern.
The investigation remains ongoing, with more details expected following the autopsy report.
