Eric Jerome Dickey’s Friends and Lovers Coming to Lifetime as Two-Part Movie Event
Lifetime is set to adapt the late Eric Jerome Dickey’s best-selling novel Friends and Lovers into a two-part movie event premiering this November. The project will be featured in the network’s “Love of a Lifetime” lineup, which highlights acclaimed works by Black authors and storytellers.
The story centers on four interconnected lives. Debra is a determined physician balancing career and personal challenges, while her best friend Shelby lives a bold, rule-defying life. Their paths cross with Leonard, a rising comedian fighting for his big break, and Tyrese, his loyal friend. As secrets unravel and love is tested, the characters must confront betrayal, forgiveness, and the fragile bonds that tie them together.
The cast brings notable star power to the screen. Naturi Naughton takes on the role of Debra, Simone Missick portrays Shelby, Kendrick Sampson steps into the role of Leonard, and RonReaco Lee plays Tyrese. Behind the camera, D’Angela Proctor directs with Aireka Muse penning the screenplay. The production is being managed by Undaunted and Motion Entertainment.
When first published in the late 1990s, Friends and Lovers became one of Dickey’s most celebrated novels. Known for his vibrant storytelling and unflinching look at the complexities of Black relationships and identity, Dickey built a devoted readership that cherished his explorations of love, resilience, and human vulnerability. His passing in 2021 left a void in the literary world, but his work continues to resonate with audiences.
Part One of the adaptation will premiere on November 15 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by Part Two on November 16 at the same time. The two-night event is expected to honor the spirit of Dickey’s novel while giving audiences a fresh, visually compelling take on his timeless themes. The project marks not only a celebration of his legacy but also an opportunity to introduce his work to a new generation of viewers.
