Fayetteville State Reclaims the CIAA Volleyball Crown with Sweep Over Shaw
Fayetteville State University returned to the top of CIAA volleyball by capturing the 2025 conference championship with a dominant sweep of Shaw University inside A C Jordan Arena in Bowie, Maryland. The Broncos defeated the Bears 25 22, 25 22, and 25 23 in a tightly contested match that showcased resilience, poise, and championship level execution.
The victory completes a redemption story for Fayetteville State, which finished as the runner up last season. The win pushes the Broncos to a 21 5 overall record with a 15 2 mark in conference play. Shaw ends its year at 14 11 and 10 6 in the CIAA.
Every set featured intense rallies and momentum swings, with Shaw applying pressure through aggressive hitting and committed defense. Fayetteville State countered with timely blocks, composed serving, and late set heroics. In the opening frame, both teams delivered 12 kills, but the Broncos capitalized on a late push sparked by Ramona Pulu’s strong attacking and two important blocks from Amihan Johnson to secure the 25 22 win.
The second set followed a similar script. Shaw struggled to maintain consistency on offense while Fayetteville State found its rhythm behind the steady setting of Giovanna Teixeira and clutch swings from Pulu and Symone Morris. The Broncos again closed the set 25 22 to move ahead two sets to none.
Shaw delivered its best offensive performance in the third frame with 17 kills, but the Broncos maintained their composure. Strong defensive stands and an improved hitting percentage helped Fayetteville State seal the 25 23 victory that sent the bench and crowd into celebration.
Fayetteville State totaled 35 kills with a .142 hitting percentage, while Shaw finished with 39 kills but only .090 efficiency. The Broncos dominated at the net with 12 blocks compared to Shaw’s six and added seven service aces to maintain pressure throughout the match.
Ramona Pulu led Fayetteville State with 11 kills and 12 total points. Amihan Johnson added four kills, six blocks, and two aces. Symone Morris contributed eight kills and eight digs, and setter Giovanna Teixeira directed the offense with 27 assists, two aces, and three blocks. Libero Jasmine Culp anchored the defense with 15 digs. For Shaw, Khamare Steppe posted nine kills, while Kya Moore added eight kills, 17 assists, three aces, and four blocks. MaKayla Brown recorded seven kills and 17 digs, and Kalia Morris finished with 17 digs.
This championship marks Fayetteville State’s seventh CIAA volleyball title, adding to championships in 1996, 1998, 2007, 2012, 2013, 2019, and 2021. Head Coach Chynna Hunt guided the Broncos back to the top in her second season at the helm.
Coach Hunt expressed deep pride following the win. She said the championship reflects the hard work and commitment the team has dedicated to building a culture of excellence. She also shared how meaningful it was to bring the title back to a program that means so much to her.

The national tournament includes 23 automatic qualifiers and 41 at large selections, with all teams seeded one through eight across eight regional sites.
