Former NC State Star D.J. Burns Joins Greensboro Swarm for G-League Run

Former NC State standout D J Burns Jr is returning to familiar territory as he begins the next chapter of his professional basketball career with the Greensboro Swarm. The move brings one of the most recognizable figures from college basketball back to the Carolinas and gives the Charlotte Hornets organization a popular new talent to develop in the G League system.

Burns became a household name during NC State’s unforgettable Final Four run in 2024. His dominant play in the paint, soft touch around the rim, and charismatic personality made him a national fan favorite. He earned South Region Most Outstanding Player honors during that postseason stretch and finished his final season averaging nearly 13 points along with four rebounds and close to three assists per game. His footwork and passing ability set him apart, especially for a player his size.

Although Burns went undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft, he continued his career overseas in South Korea with the Goyang Sono Skygunners. There, he gained valuable professional experience and logged more than 50 games of action. The overseas season helped him improve his conditioning and expand his offensive game while adjusting to the pace and physicality of professional basketball.

The Greensboro Swarm acquired Burns through the G League player pool and believe his skill set, personality, and work ethic make him an ideal fit. The organization sees potential in his touch, size, and interior play and there is optimism that he can grow into a reliable force within the Hornets system. For Burns, the opportunity represents a return to a region that embraced him and a fanbase that still views him as a beloved figure.

Burns will now have the chance to showcase his development in front of familiar supporters while chasing the ultimate goal of earning a call up to the NBA. If he brings the same intensity and confidence that defined his college success, Greensboro fans may witness another memorable chapter in his journey. As the G League season approaches, anticipation is building to see whether Burns can turn his inspiring rise at NC State into a long term professional story in the Carolinas.
