‘Michael’ Becomes Lionsgate’s Highest-Grossing Film Ever, Surpasses $900 Million Worldwide
The Michael Jackson biopic Michael continues to dominate theaters around the world, surpassing $900 million at the global box office and moving closer to becoming the highest-grossing musical biopic in history.
The film, released by Lionsgate domestically and distributed internationally by Universal Pictures, has already become the highest-grossing movie in Lionsgate's history. With worldwide earnings now exceeding $900 million, the film sits just $11 million behind Bohemian Rhapsody, which currently holds the record for the highest-grossing musical biopic with $911 million worldwide.
If Michael passes that mark, it will secure a new place in box office history while further cementing the enduring global appeal of the King of Pop's legacy.
International audiences have played a major role in the film's success. The movie has generated more than $544.8 million overseas, while domestic ticket sales have climbed to approximately $355.2 million. Industry analysts believe the film could eventually reach the coveted $1 billion milestone as it continues its theatrical run in additional markets.
Now in its seventh week in theaters, Michael has performed exceptionally well across multiple countries. The United Kingdom leads all international markets with $68 million in ticket sales, followed by France with $54.3 million and Germany with $34.4 million. Other strong markets include Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Italy, and Spain, all of which have contributed significantly to the film's record-breaking performance.
The biopic has also posted impressive numbers in Colombia, the Netherlands, South Korea, China, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Peru, India, Switzerland, and Belgium. In many of those territories, Michael has already outperformed Bohemian Rhapsody.
The film's success is particularly notable given its reported production budget of more than $200 million before marketing and promotional costs. Despite the sizable investment, audiences around the globe have embraced the project, turning it into one of the most successful music-related films ever released.
With momentum still on its side and additional international releases ahead, Michael appears poised to continue its historic run and potentially become the first musical biopic to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide.
