Morris Brown College Reinstates President Dr Kevin James One Week After Firing
Morris Brown College has reinstated Dr Kevin James as president just one week after announcing his termination. The decision came after the Board of Trustees voted to rescind his firing following public backlash and internal review.
The reinstatement follows concerns raised after Dr James stated his employment had been terminated without explanation, despite having a contract that extended through 2029. The decision also came just weeks before the college’s scheduled accreditation reaffirmation visit, raising alarm among students, alumni, and supporters.
In a statement released on January 20, the Board of Trustees confirmed that it reached a mutually agreed upon resolution with Dr James on January 16. The board acknowledged that the termination process did not fully follow the procedural and contractual requirements outlined in his employment agreement. The board also issued an apology, stating it deeply regretted the harm caused to the institution, students, families, donors, supporters, and Dr James.
While rescinding the termination addressed the immediate process failures, the board acknowledged that broader concerns remain regarding workplace culture, trust, and the overall experience of employees. The board committed to reviewing governance practices and institutional procedures moving forward.
Dr James, who has served as president of Morris Brown College for seven years, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue leading the institution. He thanked Board Chairman Bishop Michael Mitchell for his leadership and support during the process.
Addressing students and parents, Dr James emphasized their importance to the institution, calling them the heartbeat of Morris Brown College. He reaffirmed his commitment to leading with focus, stability, and advocacy.
Looking ahead, Dr James stated that the college’s immediate priorities include healing from the recent events and continuing preparation for the upcoming accreditation reaffirmation visit. He emphasized confidence in the institution’s readiness and commitment to moving forward.
