NCCU Introduces New Companion Mascot Alongside Eddie the Eagle
North Carolina Central University is expanding its mascot family with the introduction of a new companion for its beloved Eddie the Eagle.
The university revealed the new character this week through the NCCU Cheer Instagram page, giving students, alumni and supporters their first look at the addition. The new mascot is expected to join Eddie as another representation of NCCU spirit and pride.
Eddie the Eagle has been a recognizable symbol of North Carolina Central University since 1972, when the character was created and officially became the university’s mascot. For more than five decades, Eddie has represented the Eagles at athletic events, campus celebrations and other major moments across the university community.
Now, NCCU is inviting its community to help shape the identity of the newest member of the mascot family.
Rather than immediately announcing a name, the university is allowing fans and supporters to submit their suggestions. The announcement has already generated plenty of conversation on social media, with several commenters suggesting Annie as the name for Eddie’s new companion.
While Annie appears to be a popular choice among those responding to the post, NCCU has not confirmed whether that will ultimately be the selected name.
The university says the official name will be revealed at the end of this week, leaving students, alumni and fans waiting to see what the new mascot will be called.
The addition comes during an exciting period for NCCU, which continues to expand its presence both academically and athletically. The university recently surpassed 9,000 students for the first time in its history and received more than $110 million through North Carolina’s newly enacted state budget to support operations, enrollment growth, academic programs, campus improvements and athletics.
As Eddie the Eagle prepares to welcome a new companion, NCCU fans now have another reason to follow along and get involved.
Whether the new mascot ultimately receives the name Annie or something completely unexpected, the newest member of the Eagle family is already generating excitement across the NCCU community.
The official name is expected to be announced by the end of the week.
