Soulja Boy Honored by Spotify With Plaque After “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” Surpasses 1 Billion Streams

Soulja Boy, also known as Big Draco, is celebrating a major milestone for one of the most recognizable records of his career. Spotify has honored the rapper with a commemorative plaque after his 2008 hit “Kiss Me Thru The Phone”surpassed 1 billion streams on the platform.

Released as the second pre-release single from Soulja Boy’s sophomore album iSouljaBoyTellem, “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” became one of the biggest records of his career. The song features R&B singer Sammie on the chorus and reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 while also topping the U.S. rap charts. Internationally, the record reached the top 10 in the United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand.

One of the song’s most memorable elements was the inclusion of the phone number 678-999-8212, which became closely associated with the record and its concept of connecting with someone over the phone.

The number eventually became more than just a lyric. During a 2023 interview with HipHopDX, Soulja Boy discussed how the number operated as a fan line that allowed listeners to call or text him. He claimed the service generated significant revenue, at one point saying it brought in approximately $100,000 per month.

The fan line was eventually shut down, and Soulja Boy later expressed interest in regaining control of the number.

Sammie has also shared the story behind his involvement with the record. In a 2021 social media post, the singer explained that he crossed paths with Soulja Boy while attending an Ace Hood video shoot. Soulja Boy told him about a hook he wanted Sammie to record for what would become the final song needed for his album.

After working around their schedules, the two eventually recorded the track. Sammie later reflected on the record's impact, describing it as one of the biggest songs of that summer.

Now, more than 15 years after its original release, “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” has reached another significant milestone. With more than 1 billion Spotify streams and a plaque from Spotify commemorating the achievement, the song continues to introduce its signature sound and memorable hook to new generations of listeners.

The milestone further adds to the legacy of a record that became a defining crossover hit during an era when hip-hop and R&B were increasingly meeting in the mainstream.
