Tasia Fortune, 29, Found Dead in Jackson as Community Calls for Answers and Transparency

JACKSON, Miss. — The death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune has sparked growing calls for transparency after her body was discovered hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi.

Fortune was found Monday, Aug. 3, according to the Jackson Police Department. Investigators said her body may have been at the location for three to four days before it was discovered. The Hinds County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity Thursday.

Authorities have not publicly determined how Fortune died or whether foul play was involved. Her body has been transported to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy is expected to help determine the cause and manner of death.

Jackson police described the case as an active and ongoing death investigation. Crime scene investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding Fortune’s death, but officials have released few additional details.

The circumstances surrounding the discovery have nevertheless raised concerns among members of the Jackson community, particularly because of Mississippi’s documented history of racial violence and lynchings. Community leaders have stressed that those concerns should not be treated as proof of a crime, but they are calling for a thorough investigation that leaves no unanswered questions.

Bernice King, daughter of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., addressed the situation publicly, urging people not to rush to conclusions while emphasizing the importance of transparency and truth.

Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes has also asked federal authorities to assist with the investigation. In a letter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Stokes said the community is in urgent need of answers.

Fortune’s family is now grieving while awaiting information about what happened to their loved one. Her sister, LaToni, told Mississippi Today that Fortune regularly traveled between Jackson and Kentucky to visit family.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help Fortune’s family cover funeral expenses. The campaign describes her as a strong-minded, compassionate and vibrant young woman whose death has deeply affected those who knew her.

As investigators continue examining the case, Fortune’s family and community members are calling for answers, accountability and dignity. Until the autopsy and investigation are complete, the circumstances surrounding her death remain undetermined.
